How hard is the water in Brigham City?
Brigham City's Water page lists the city's water hardness as 17 to 20 grains per gallon. The page gives no test date (source). The U.S. Geological Survey calls water very hard above 180 mg/L, which is about 10.5 grains per gallon (source). The city's 2025 Water Quality Report, linked from the same page, names springs and wells as its sources, and says springs produced 5 billion gallons in 2025 and wells approximately 2 billion. We found no published hardness figure for Tremonton. Water this hard leaves scale on fixtures, inside valves, and most of all where water is heated. We test at your tap before we size a water softener. If a tank heater rumbles or pops as it heats, that is scale on the bottom of the tank. See water heater repair.
Where can a sump pump drain in Box Elder County?
Not into the sewer. The Town of Mantua tells residents it is illegal to empty a sump pump into the sewer system, and that the water must go to a spot away from the foundation, such as a dry well, creek, pond, or neighborhood drain (source). Rules differ by town, so check with yours before a discharge line goes in. The reason for a pump in the first place is ground water. The Utah Geological Survey says shallow groundwater can flood basements and damage buried utility lines (source). We do sump pump installation and run the discharge line to a legal spot. A discharge line that ends too close to the house sends the same water back to the pit. A line that holds water can freeze in winter, so it has to drain.
How often does a backflow assembly have to be tested in Brigham City?
Every year. Brigham City Public Works' backflow flyer says existing and new backflow prevention assemblies must be tested annually, and also after repairs or if devices are relocated. It says the city notifies owners by mail when an assembly is needed, and that water service is terminated for owners who do not comply (source). The state rule says the same thing about timing: backflow assemblies shall be inspected and tested at least once a year by a certified individual (source). A backflow assembly keeps water from a sprinkler system, a boiler, or a business process from flowing back into the drinking water. Its seals and springs wear, and it can crack if it freezes. We do backflow testing for homes and businesses.
What should I know if my Box Elder County home is on a septic system?
A septic system here needs a permit from the health department before it is built or changed. Bear River Health Department, which has buildings in Brigham City and Tremonton, says a septic permit is required before constructing, altering, or repairing a septic system on a property where sewer lines are not available. It says the system must meet design and location standards based on the property's soil conditions and percolation test results (source). Permits, pumping, and the drain field go through the health department and the companies it permits. Our part is the plumbing. When drains are slow in a house on septic, a sewer camera inspection of the line from the house shows whether the clog is in the pipe or past it, at the tank. Drain cleaning clears a clog in the pipe.
How cold does it get in Box Elder County, and how old are the homes?
The 1991–2020 climate normals for the Brigham City Waste Plant weather station show a normal January low of 18.1°F, and an average of 2.1 January days with a low at or below 0°F (source). A hose left on an outdoor faucet, or a pipe in an unheated space, can freeze and split. The leak shows up when it thaws. The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 estimates put the median year built at 1983 for Box Elder County (source) and 1971 for Brigham City (source). A median of 1971 means about half of Brigham City's homes are older than that. In a house that age, pressure that has dropped over the years or pinhole leaks in more than one place are reasons to look at the supply pipe. See leak detection and repiping.
How do you schedule plumbing jobs in Box Elder County?
We are based in Lehi and send plumbers into Box Elder County from there. We do not post an arrival time on this page, because we have not measured one and will not promise a number we cannot keep. When you call, a person tells you when a plumber can be there, so you can decide with a real answer in hand. For a burst pipe, a sewage backup, or no hot water, call our emergency line. It is answered 24/7. For planned work, such as a water heater or a softener, you can book a visit. Estimates are free, and you get the estimate before any work starts. Our work carries a guarantee, and financing is available for larger jobs. We offer the same services in every town in the county, for homes and for businesses.
