It says one way to prevent sewage backup there is to install a "back-flow valve" on the lowest drain, and that a plumber's test plug can also close these drains when not in use. Sediment trap and pressure regulator

OgdenAugust 2026

Problem
A water heater needed a sediment trap, and a waste and overflow and a pressure regulator valve needed to be replaced.
What we did
We added a sediment trap to the water heater. We replaced the waste and overflow with chrome trim and converted its slip-joint connection to a glued connection. We replaced the pressure regulator valve and connected it to PEX.

Faucets, Sinks, and Showers

OgdenFebruary 2026

Problem
A jetted tub needed a Roman tub valve, and a waste and overflow needed to be replaced.
What we did
We drilled out the holes on the tub, installed the Roman tub valve with isolation valves, put on the trim, and tested for leaks. We replaced the waste and overflow in ABS plastic.

Sump Pump Installation

OgdenJanuary 2026

Problem
A sump pump needed to be rerouted, and a pump in the garage area needed to be replaced.
What we did
We pulled a permit and jackhammered a pit inside the basement. We rerouted the sump pump and took it about 10 feet over the hill, with an inspection before and after. We also replaced the pump in the garage area.

How old are the sewer lines under Ogden, and what does that mean for my drain?

Old, by the city's own count. Ogden City's 2023 Sewer Master Plan counts 279.5 miles of city sewer main, and says over 50% of the lines are older than 50 years. By length, 45.6% of the mains are concrete, 19.1% are clay, and 18.4% are PVC, and 8.9% are listed as older than 1920 (source). Those numbers describe the city's mains. The plan does not cover the line from your house to the main, and that line is yours. Ogden City says the main in the street is the city's responsibility, and the line from the main to the house is the resident's (source). We do not guess what your own line is made of. We look. A sewer camera inspection shows the pipe, the joints, and any roots, breaks, or sags. If the line is broken, we do sewer line repair. When the pipe and the site allow it, trenchless sewer repair fixes the line from the inside.

How do I keep sewage from backing up into my basement in Ogden?

Start with the lowest drain in the house. Ogden City says that if the lowest level of your home is below ground, such as a basement floor drain, it may one day be affected by a backup. The city says one way to prevent that is to install a "back-flow valve" on the lowest drain, and that a plumber's test plug can close these drains when they are not in use. It also says not to put grease down the disposal or the drain, and never to flush diapers, sanitary napkins, or paper towels (source). The city lists pipe breaks or cracks due to tree roots among the causes of backups (source). If sewage is already coming up, keep people and pets away from it and stop running water. Then call us. Drain cleaning clears a clog. It does not fix a broken pipe, so a drain that clogs again and again needs a camera.

Where does Ogden's water come from, and what is in it?

Ogden City's 2025 water quality report says customers receive water from three main sources: groundwater from wells, surface water drawn from Pineview Reservoir and Wheeler Creek, and treated water purchased from Weber Basin Water Conservancy District. The report lists total dissolved solids of 128 to 380 ppm in the city's own system, sampled in 2025. It lists no hardness figure, so we do not quote one for Ogden (source). Weber Basin's 2025 report says the hardness of its own water can range from 10 to 18 grains per gallon (source). The city also says water from Pineview Reservoir can have an odd odor or taste in summer, that it is still safe to drink, and that it returns to normal in the fall (source). With three sources, your tap may not match a tap across town. We test at your tap before we size a water softener. If a tank heater rumbles or pops as it heats, see water heater repair.

Who is responsible for the water line to my house in Ogden, and where is the shut-off?

In most cases, the meter is the dividing line. Ogden City says it maintains the water distribution system up to the water meter, and that private water mains, service lines, and meter pits are the responsibility of the property owner (source). The city's 2025 water quality report says its service line inventory has been classified as nonlead (source). Your own shut-off is inside. The city says that in most single-family homes the valve is in the basement or the crawl space, on a wall facing the meter box, and it tells residents to know where it is and test it regularly (source). Find yours before you need it. Signs of a leak on your side of the meter are a water bill that climbs with no change in use, a wet strip of lawn between the meter and the house, or the sound of running water when every faucet is off. We do leak detection to find the spot before anyone digs.

How cold does Ogden get, and how do I keep pipes from freezing?

Cold enough to freeze a pipe on most January nights. The 1991–2020 climate normals for the Ogden Pioneer Powerhouse weather station show a normal January low of 21.9°F, and an average of 27.6 January days with a low at or below 32°F (source). Ogden City tells residents to turn off and drain sprinkler systems before the first freeze, to disconnect hoses from outdoor faucets, and to insulate pipes close to exterior walls or in unheated basements. It also says to winterize unheated or vacant buildings (source). We do winterization for lived-in homes and for houses that sit empty. If a pipe has already frozen, shut off the water at the main valve and call us about frozen pipes. The split may not leak until the pipe thaws. A backflow preventer on a sprinkler system sits outside too. The city says backflow preventers have to be tested within 10 days of initial use and re-certified every year by a certified tester (source). We do backflow testing.

Which part of Ogden has the oldest homes, and what does that mean for the plumbing?

East Central, by the city's own account. Ogden's East Central Community Plan says the area lies directly east of the central business district and west of Harrison Boulevard, between the bluff south of the Ogden River and 30th Street. The plan calls it the original residential area as Ogden developed in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and says most of its homes were built in the early 1900s (source). Across the whole city, the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates put the median year built at 1966 (source). So about half of Ogden's homes are older than that. A house that old may have been replumbed once, in part, or not at all, and we do not guess which. Low pressure through the whole house, or leaks in more than one place, are reasons to ask about repiping. A drain that clogs again and again is a reason for a sewer camera inspection. You get the estimate before any work starts.
