Toilet Repair and Replacement
American ForkAugust 2026
- Problem
- The customer had three new toilets to replace the old ones.
- What we did
- We picked up the toilets from the store, installed all three, and hauled the old ones away.
Toilet repair fixes a toilet that runs, leaks at the base, rocks, flushes weakly, or keeps clogging. Toilet replacement takes out an old or cracked toilet and sets the toilet you choose. Call when the toilet runs on and off, or when water shows on the floor around it. We repair and replace toilets across northern Utah. Estimates are free.

A toilet that keeps running is letting water out of the tank, or it is not shutting off the water coming in. Lift the tank lid and look. There are four usual causes:
High water pressure is hard on a fill valve. The City of Saratoga Springs says its water pressure can vary from 40 to 150 psi depending on where you live in a pressure zone (source).
To stop the water until the repair, close the shut-off valve on the wall or floor behind the toilet. Turn it clockwise.
A toilet that leaks at the base usually has a failed wax ring. The wax ring is the seal between the bottom of the toilet and the drain pipe in the floor. When the seal breaks, a little water escapes with every flush.
A wax ring fails for these reasons:
Water on the floor can also come from above. A dripping supply line, loose tank bolts, or a sweating tank all run down to the base. Dry everything with a towel and watch where the water shows first.
Use another toilet until the leak is fixed. Water from a failed wax ring has been through the bowl, and it soaks into the floor. Do not tighten the bolts harder. Too much force cracks the porcelain.
A toilet that flushes weakly is not getting water into the bowl fast enough, or the water cannot get out. These are the usual causes:
Flush only toilet paper.
Repair a toilet when the porcelain is sound and the problem is a part. Replace the toilet when the tank or the bowl is cracked, or when the same problem keeps coming back.
Repair makes sense for:
Replacement makes sense when:
The EPA says older toilets use as much as 6 gallons per flush. The current federal standard is 1.6 gallons, and toilets with the WaterSense label use 1.28 gallons per flush or less (source).
A toilet replacement takes out the old toilet and sets the toilet you choose on a sound flange with a new seal. The steps are:

We tell you the cost before we start the work.
A toilet with a silent leak lets water slip from the tank into the bowl, with nothing on the floor and little or no sound. The EPA says an old or worn flapper can cause a toilet to flush on its own or silently leak thousands of gallons a year (source).
Watch for these signs:
Then check your water meter. The City of Orem says the meter is typically near the front sidewalk under a metal lid, with a small red dial near its center (source). With every faucet and fixture off, a dial that keeps turning means water is moving somewhere.
A few drops of food coloring in the tank confirm a toilet leak. Our leak detection page explains the test.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Refills on and off by itself | Worn flapper | Replace the flapper |
| Runs without stopping | Fill valve that will not shut off, or a float set too high | Adjust or replace the fill valve |
| Water on the floor at the base | Failed wax ring or broken flange | Pull the toilet, repair the flange, and set a new wax ring |
| Toilet rocks | Loose bolts, uneven floor, or broken flange | Repair the flange, level the toilet, and reseal it |
| Weak flush | Mineral scale in the jets, or a low water level in the tank | Clear the jets and set the water level, or replace the toilet |
| Clogs again and again | Something stuck in the trap, or a clog in the drain line | Clear the trap or the drain line |
| Drip under the tank | Worn tank bolt gaskets, or a loose supply line | Replace the gaskets or the supply line |
What it costs
A leak behind a wall and a leak under a sink are different jobs, and so are a short gas line and a long one. We look at the work, then give you a price. The estimate is free.
Larger jobs can be paid over time through Wisetack.

Close the shut-off valve on the wall or floor behind the toilet. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops, then flush once to empty the tank. Do not force a valve that is stuck. An old valve can break or start to leak at the stem. If it will not turn, close the main water valve for the house instead.
Do not flush again. Take the lid off the tank and push the flapper down over the opening at the bottom, so no more water enters the bowl. Then close the shut-off valve behind the toilet. If water also comes up in a tub or a floor drain, the clog is in the main line. Stop running water, keep people and pets away from the sewage, and call us.
No. A crack in the tank or the bowl of a toilet cannot be repaired in a way that lasts. Cracks in porcelain can grow, and a cracked tank can give way and empty onto the floor. Close the shut-off valve behind the toilet, flush to empty the tank, and use another toilet until this one is replaced.
Measure the rough-in. That is the distance from the finished wall behind the toilet to the center of the bolts that hold the toilet to the floor. Measure from the wall, not from the baseboard. Most toilets are made for a 12-inch rough-in, and 10-inch and 14-inch models are made for other bathrooms. Then choose a round or an elongated bowl that fits the room.
