Where does American Fork's water come from, and how hard is it?

American Fork City says its water comes from two sources: springs that start in American Fork Canyon, and deep wells in the aquifer. The city operates five deep source wells, and it does not add fluoride (source). The city's 2025 Water Quality Report lists total dissolved solids of 344 to 348 ppm across those sources (source). It lists no hardness figure, so we do not quote one for American Fork. Dissolved solids and hardness are two different measures. We test the water at your tap before we size a water softener. Have it tested if you see white, crusty scale on faucets and shower heads, spots on dishes, or a water heater that rumbles or pops as it heats.

How old are the water lines in American Fork?

Some are old, and the city says so. American Fork City says its system is old in some areas, specifically some of the water lines, and that the result is localized breaks at times that may cause water outages (source). The city's 2025 Water Quality Report counts 11,200 service connections. It says the city found zero lead service lines and zero galvanized lines that require replacement (source). That inventory covers the line from the water main to the building. It does not cover the pipes inside your house, and the report says the city cannot control the materials used there. In an older house, pressure that has dropped over the years, or pinhole leaks in more than one place, are reasons to look at the pipe itself. We do leak detection, and our repiping page explains the signs.

American Fork lines its sewer pipes. Can my sewer line be lined too?

It may be, and a camera decides. American Fork City says it has cut the water that seeps into cracked sewer pipe by lining the pipes from the inside (source). Its 2026 Sewer Rehabilitation Project lined 2,366 feet of sewer pipe by pulling new plastic pipe through the existing pipe, on 550 East, 535 East, 675 North, 640 North, and streets near them (source). Those projects are in the street. The same kind of repair exists for the sewer line on your property. Trenchless sewer repair renews a buried pipe from one or two small pits, without a trench across the yard. It is not right for every pipe. A sewer camera inspection comes first and shows whether your line qualifies. If sewage is backing up, keep people and pets away from it and stop running water. Then call our emergency line.

What should I know about pressurized irrigation water in American Fork?

American Fork runs a second water system for lawns. The city says it is available from April 15 to October 15 each year, and that the water is non-potable and should never be used for drinking (source). It has to stay apart from the drinking water in your house. State rule says backflow assemblies shall be tested at least once a year by a certified tester (source). We do backflow testing for homes and businesses. When the system shuts down in mid-October, the city recommends that residents shut off and winterize their sprinklers. The city is putting meters on every connection, and it now requires that residents stop using the city's utility box and its shutoff valve. If you have no shutoff valve of your own further down the line, the city recommends that you install one before the next watering season. That valve goes on your side of the city box.

How do you schedule plumbing jobs in American Fork?

We come to American Fork from our shop in Lehi. We do not post an arrival time on this page, because we have not measured one and will not promise a number we cannot keep. When you call, a person tells you when a plumber can be there. For a burst pipe, a sewage backup, or no hot water, call our emergency line. It is answered 24/7. For planned work, such as a sewer camera inspection, a new shutoff valve, or a backflow test before April 15, you can book a visit. Estimates are free, and you get the estimate before any work starts. Our work carries a guarantee, and financing is available for larger jobs. The other cities we serve are on our Utah County page.
