  • A water quality assessment prepared for Mapleton City, dated November 12, 2018 and linked from the city's Water Quality page, lists total hardness as calcium carbonate of 189 to 320 mg/L at ten sample points, four of them the city's wells, sampled on March 5 and May 25, 2018. That is about 11.1 to about 18.7 grains per gallon. The city's 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report lists no hardness figure. Source: mapleton-ut.gov

French Drains and Drainage

MapletonJuly 2026

Problem
A staircase needed a French drain added, and a bar sink needed its drain and water lines.
What we did
We broke up the concrete in the staircase and piped in the French drain with a 55-gallon bucket filled with gravel. We also piped in the drain and the water lines for the bar sink.

Outdoor Plumbing and Hose Bibs

MapletonJuly 2026

Problem
A garage needed a hose bib with both hot and cold water.
What we did
We installed a Woodford 22 hose bib in the garage, tied in the hot side from where the tankless sits, and added a shut-off on both sides to isolate the bib. We also put a hose bib line on its own, with a shut-off to isolate it, and installed two Woodford 25 models.

Remodel Plumbing

MapletonJuly 2026

Problem
A toilet, a sink drain, and a shower valve needed to be moved, and a wet room needed a drain.
What we did
We moved the toilet about a foot over and ran the drain for the wet room. We raised the sink drain about 3 feet, rebuilt the stack to eliminate the other drain for the double sink, and moved the water lines to the new drain. We installed the customer-supplied shower valve on the opposite wall.

How hard is the water in Mapleton, and where does it come from?

Mapleton's 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report says the city's water comes from a mixture of ground water wells and springs in Maple Canyon. That report lists no hardness figure. An older city document does. A water quality assessment prepared for the city in 2018 lists total hardness of 189 to 320 mg/L at ten sample points, four of them the city's wells. That is about 11.1 to about 18.7 grains per gallon. Both documents are linked from the city's Water Quality page (source). The U.S. Geological Survey calls water above 180 mg/L very hard (source). Those samples are from March and May 2018, so we test at your tap before we size a water softener. Hard water leaves scale in a water heater tank, and a tank that rumbles or pops as it heats is telling you so. We do water heater repair.

Does my Mapleton home have pressurized irrigation, and when does it run?

Mapleton runs two water systems: drinking water, and pressurized irrigation for lawns and gardens. The city says the irrigation system uses untreated water from wells, rivers, and runoff, that the water is not for drinking, and that it is available between mid-April and mid-October (source). Not every home has it. The city's 2024 Water Systems Master Plan says developers have had to install irrigation pipe and laterals since 1998. As of 2023 the system was active in the northern and central portions of the city, and most existing developments elsewhere had dry pipe ready to be connected (source). The city is responsible for the irrigation line up to the first fitting after the irrigation meter. From there into your sprinklers or hose connection, the line is yours. Before the first hard freeze, we do winterization for hose bibs and the irrigation supply.

Do my sprinklers in Mapleton need backflow protection?

If they connect to the drinking water, yes. A flyer on Mapleton's Cross Connection Control page says the Plumbing Code requires every landscape sprinkler system connected to the public water system to have an approved backflow prevention device or assembly. It adds that a sprinkling system that can use both drinking water and secondary water must follow specific plumbing regulations, so raw water cannot enter the drinking water system (source). The city's 2025 water report gives two plain examples of a cross connection: an unprotected garden hose lying in a puddle, and an unprotected lawn sprinkler system after you have fertilized or sprayed (source). State rule says backflow assemblies shall be tested at least once a year by a certified tester (source). We do backflow testing for homes and businesses in Mapleton. If an assembly fails, we show you the readings and explain the repair.

Who is responsible for the water line to my house in Mapleton?

The first fitting after the meter is the dividing line. Mapleton City says it is responsible for the water line on the street side up to the first fitting after the drinking water meter. The property owner is responsible for the line from that fitting to the home or business (source). On a large lot, that line can be a long one. The city's General Plan says the neighborhoods closer to the foothills include a significant number of one-acre, two-acre and larger lots (source). A leak on your side is yours to fix. Signs of one are a water bill that climbs with no change in use, a wet strip of ground between the meter and the house, or the sound of running water when every faucet is off. We do leak detection to find the spot before anyone digs. If you are not sure which side the leak is on, call us and we will find out.

Is my Mapleton home on the city sewer or a septic system?

Mapleton has a sewer now, but the sewer is younger than the city's older houses. The city's Wastewater Master Plan says no wastewater system existed before 1995, and wastewater was treated through individual septic systems. Construction of the sewer began in 1996. The 2018 plan says the system serves all of the developed areas within the city limits (source). The city says the system now has approximately 85 miles of sewer main, 6 lift stations, and about 2000 manholes, and sends all of its wastewater to the Spanish Fork Sewer Treatment Plant (source). So a house that stood before 1996 was built before there was a sewer to connect to. If you do not know where your line runs or what shape it is in, a sewer camera inspection shows you. If a home is still on a septic tank, a septic pumping company pumps the tank. Our part is the plumbing. If sewage backs up, keep people and pets away from it and stop running water.

How old are homes in Mapleton, and what does that mean for the plumbing?

The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates put the median year built for Mapleton homes at 2005 (source). The city's General Plan says the population nearly doubled, from 5,809 in 2000 to 10,762 in 2020, and describes a small historic core near Main Street and Maple Street, surrounded by newer subdivisions (source). In a house built around 2005, a water heater that has never been replaced is now about twenty years old. If it leaks at the tank, or the hot water runs out sooner than it used to, ask us about water heater replacement. Older homes get a different question. The city asks owners of homes built before 1991 to identify what their water service line is made of, and says its own mains are primarily ductile iron and PVC (source). When the pipe in an older house leaks in more than one place, we do repiping.
