How hard is the water in Orem?

It depends on which source is feeding your tap. Orem's water report posted in 2026 lists 7 to 25 grains per gallon in the city's own wells and springs, and 6.55 to 9 in the treated surface water from the Don A. Christiansen plant, sampled 2018–2025. The same report says about 60% of Orem's water is surface water and 40% is ground water, from nine deep wells and two mountain springs in Provo Canyon. All of it is blended together inside the distribution system (source). So the report gives a range, not one number for your street. Hard water leaves scale in water heaters, on fixtures, and inside valves. We test the water at your tap before we size a water softener. A water heater that rumbles or pops may have sediment on the bottom of the tank. That is a water heater repair call.

What should I do when a sewer backs up in Orem?

Keep people and pets away from the sewage and stop running water. Then call the City of Orem's Public Works Department, so the city can check its main. The city says its collection system is approximately 340 miles of sewer pipe serving approximately 24,325 sewer connections. It cleans the entire system every 2-3 years, and it owns equipment that removes tree roots and grease from the lines. The city also says its inspection van carries a small camera on a push cable that can inspect the homeowner's sewer lateral (source). If the main is clear, the clog or the break is in the line that serves your building. Our sewer camera inspection shows where it is and what the pipe looks like. From there the fix is drain cleaning or sewer line repair. You get a free estimate before any work starts.

How can I tell if I have a water leak in Orem?

The City of Orem gives a test you can do at the meter. The meter is typically near the front sidewalk, under a metal lid. First close the shutoff valve to the building. The city says it is usually near the point where the water line enters the building. Shut off any sprinklers on the same line. Then open the meter lid and look at the small red dial near the center of the meter. If the dial is moving, water is leaking from the service line between the building and the meter. If it stops, the city says to check the sprinklers and the indoor plumbing (source). The city also recommends that a building with no working shutoff valve have one installed. Leak detection finds the spot on a buried line before anyone digs. If water is running right now, call our emergency line.

Do my sprinklers need backflow protection in Orem?

Yes. The City of Orem says all irrigation systems, new or existing, must be equipped with a State of Utah approved backflow prevention assembly. The assembly keeps water from your lawn or garden from siphoning back into your home's plumbing and the city water line. The city also says to drain a backflow device that is connected to a sprinkler system so it does not freeze in winter (source). Orem's report posted in 2026 says backflow assembly test reports should be submitted annually by a licensed backflow assembly tester, through the city's online portal (source). We do backflow testing for homes and businesses. For a garden hose, the city says a hose bib vacuum breaker is the minimum protection. It goes between the hose and the faucet.

How old are homes in Orem, and how cold does it get?

The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 estimates put the median year built for Orem homes at 1989 (source). ENERGY STAR says to consider replacement once a water heater is more than 10 years old (source). Check the date on the label of yours. If it is past that age, ask us about water heater replacement. Supply pipe ages too. Pressure that has dropped over the years, or pinhole leaks in more than one place, are reasons to look at the pipe itself. Our repiping page explains the signs. Winter is the other test. The 1991–2020 climate normals for the Orem treatment plant weather station show a normal January low of 20.3°F, and an average of 25.7 January days with a low at or below 32°F (source). Know where your main water valve is before a pipe freezes.
