Who provides water in Holladay, and how hard is it?

It depends on your address. The City of Holladay lists three water providers: Salt Lake City Public Utilities, Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, and Holliday Water Co. (source). Your water bill names yours. Salt Lake City's 2026 Water Quality Report says its service area includes portions of Holladay. It lists total hardness of 8.0, 10.2, and 12.4 grains per gallon at its three city treatment plants, and 9.6 to 33.4 across its wells and springs (source). Holliday Water Company's 2025 report says its sources include wells and springs, and that it also receives water from Salt Lake City Public Utilities. It lists total dissolved solids of 192 to 804 ppm and no hardness figure (source). So two homes in Holladay can have different water. Hard water leaves scale in a water heater tank, and a tank that rumbles or pops as it heats is telling you so. We do water heater repair, and we test at your tap before we size a water softener.

Who is responsible for the sewer line to my house in Holladay?

In the part of Holladay that Mt. Olympus Improvement District serves, you are, all the way to the main. The City of Holladay lists two sewer providers, Mt. Olympus Improvement District and Cottonwood Improvement District (source). Mt. Olympus says upkeep of the service line from the home, up to and including the connection to the main line and the tap, is the responsibility of each property owner. If your sewer backs up, the District asks you to call it. It answers 24 hours a day at no extra charge, and it checks whether the problem is in the part of the system it maintains (source). Keep people and pets away from the sewage, and stop running water. If the District's main is clear, the clog or break is in your line. A sewer camera inspection shows where. From there we do drain cleaning, sewer line repair, and, where the pipe allows it, trenchless sewer repair. If Cottonwood Improvement District serves your address, ask it about its own rules.

How old are homes in Holladay, and what does that mean for the pipes?

The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates put the median year built for Holladay homes at 1969 (source). About half of the homes are older than that. In a house that age, the sewer line and the supply pipe may be the originals. Mt. Olympus Improvement District says taps with root invasion are usually found in older neighborhoods where the system is made of clay pipe. Roots creep into pipe seams looking for moisture, and they can grow into a mass that blocks the line. The District also says it will inspect your tap from inside the main line upon request (source). We run a sewer camera inspection of your line, and you can ask the District to look at the tap. Inside the house, pressure that has dropped over the years, or pinhole leaks in more than one place, point to repiping.

Why does water get into basements in Holladay?

Water moves through Holladay in more places than the creek. The city's Natural Hazards page lists creeks and water tables among the geologic hazards in many areas of the city, and names Big Cottonwood Creek under its flood code (source). The city also says three canals and two creeks supply 9 private irrigation companies in Holladay through ditches and pipes called laterals, which the city does not maintain. When irrigation water was turned into the Big Cottonwood Tanner Ditch during spring run-off, the city says basements flooded, and the council stopped allowing it (source). If your home is near a creek, a ditch, or a lateral, pour a bucket of water into the sump pit before spring. If the pump does not start and empty it, call us for sump pump repair. Mt. Olympus Improvement District says it is illegal to connect a sump pump to the sanitary sewer (source). If water is already on the floor, stay out of standing water, and shut off power at the breaker only if you can reach it from a dry spot.
