A three-quarter bath in a basement was becoming a wet room, and the sink would not fit in the bathroom layout.
What we did
We moved the drain lines, replaced the floor drain in the ground with a new one, and installed a three-piece drain for the wet room. We moved the water lines and drain lines for the sink to just outside the bathroom door. All plumbing was installed to code.

Who supplies the water at my home in Millcreek?

It depends on your address. Millcreek's General Plan says the city does not operate its own water system. The largest portion of homes and businesses gets water from Salt Lake City Public Utilities, and the second largest from Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District. A small portion is on Holliday Water Company, about 150 homes are on Boundary Spring Water Company, and a handful of properties are on Murray City Water (source). To find yours, the city says to enter your address in its Map Gallery and click the "Water Service" layer (source). Your provider is who you call about the main and the meter. Ask it where its part of the line ends. Jordan Valley Water, for one, says the line from the house to the meter setter is the property owner's to repair and replace (source). Signs of a leak on your side are a bill that climbs with no change in use, or a wet strip of lawn between the meter and the house. We do leak detection to find the spot before anyone digs.

How hard is the water in Millcreek?

There is no single number, because the water comes from more than one provider. Salt Lake City Public Utilities says its service area includes portions of Millcreek. Its 2026 Water Quality Report lists total hardness of 8.0, 10.2, and 12.4 grains per gallon at its three treatment plants, and 9.6 to 33.4 grains per gallon across its wells and springs (source). Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District's 2025 report lists total hardness averaging 182.4 mg/L, about 10.7 grains per gallon, with a low of 16.0 and a high of 381 mg/L (source). The U.S. Geological Survey calls water from 121 to 180 mg/L hard, and more than 180 mg/L very hard (source). Neither report gives a figure for Millcreek alone, so we test at your tap before we size a water softener. Hard water leaves scale in a water heater tank. A tank that rumbles or pops as it heats is a reason to call for water heater repair.

Who is responsible for the sewer line at my Millcreek home?

You are, up to and including the connection to the main. Millcreek lists Mt. Olympus Improvement District as its sewer provider (source). The District says upkeep of the service line from the home up to and including its connection to the main line, and the tap connection itself, is the responsibility of each property owner. It names grease buildup, roots, broken or cracked pipes, deteriorating clay pipe, and bad connections to the main as causes of a backup (source). If sewage backs up, keep people and pets away from it and stop running water. The District says to call it. It provides emergency service 24 hours a day at no extra charge, and it checks whether the problem is in the part of the system it maintains. If the trouble is in your line, a sewer camera inspection shows where the pipe is blocked or broken. From there we do sewer line repair, and where the pipe allows it, trenchless sewer repair.

How old are homes in Millcreek, and what does that mean for the pipes?

The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates put the median year built for Millcreek homes at 1973 (source). About half of the homes are older than that. Age matters most underground. Mt. Olympus Improvement District says taps with root invasion are usually found in older neighborhoods, where the system is made of clay pipe rather than the plastic pipe available today. Roots creep into pipe seams in search of moisture, and they can grow into a mass that blocks the line. The District says it will inspect your tap from inside the main on request, and it suggests a TV inspection of the sewer line when you buy in an older neighborhood (source). We do not guess at the pipe from the age of the house. A sewer camera inspection shows what is there. A drain that clogs again and again is a reason to look inside the line before you pay for another drain cleaning. Inside the house, pinhole leaks in more than one place point to repiping.

Is my Millcreek home at risk of flooding from the creeks?

It depends on how close you are to one. Millcreek says it has floodplain hazard areas around Mill Creek, Big Cottonwood Creek, and Neff Creek, and its interactive map shows them (source). Olympus Cove is a special case. The city says updated flood work maps designate the floodplain along Neff's Creek as an active alluvial fan, and that active alluvial fans are prone to sudden, unpredictable flood events (source). In May 2019, a city newsletter reported that a debris flow sent Neff's Creek out of its channel and through yards in the Mount Olympus neighborhood, and that crews sandbagged 35 to 40 homes and driveways (source). If your basement has a sump pit, pour a bucket of water into it before spring. If the pump does not start and empty it, call us for sump pump repair. A battery backup keeps the pump running when the power is out. If water is already on the floor, stay out of standing water, and shut off power at the breaker only if you can reach it from a dry spot.

Can I connect my sump pump to the sewer in Millcreek?

No. Mt. Olympus Improvement District says not to connect French drains, sump pumps, gutters, and other flood control systems to the sanitary sewer. It says the connection is illegal, and that debris and silt will clog your line. The District also says storm water in a sewer system can overload the pipes and the treatment plant and cause overflows (source). Rain and snowmelt belong in the storm system. Millcreek says it maintains 30.19 miles of storm drain pipes, with 1709 catch basins and 106 outfalls into Mill Creek, Big Cottonwood Creek, Neff's Creek, and Parleys Creek, and that run-off goes directly to that system and the waterways (source). Where a pump can send its water depends on your lot, so ask the city's stormwater staff before you pipe it to the street. If an old pump or drain is tied into the sewer, we can reroute it. We do sump pump installation and French drains and drainage.
